* delta places smith in temporary role
Delta has appointed director of sales Europe Steve Smith to the position of acting headvice-president Europe, following the departure of Delta vice-president Europe Stephen Egli. Smith has been with Delta for the past three years and will remain acting head until Delta appoints someone to take on the role permanently.
* mediterranean shipping additions
Mediterranean Shipping Cruises is believed to be close to ordering two new 60,000-ton vessels from an Italian shipyard. UK managing director Peter Pate declined to say if a deal was imminent but admitted it had been in the market for vessels for some time (Travel Weekly September 6 1999).
* cathay pacific plans business-class revamp
Cathay Pacific is planning to upgrade its business-class product next year. Refurbishment plans include offering passengers a new Ö la carte menu service. A spokeswoman for the airline declined to reveal additional improvements but said the new menu was just one of a number of changes.
* travelocity to appoint uk manager
Travelocity is on the verge of announcing the appointment of a manager to run UK operations. The UK Web site is presently overseen by vice-president for Europe Jeff Lavender. It is also expected to announce more staff. Details are due to be released later this week.
* trans-pennine upgrades delegates
Train operatorTrans-Pennine Express will upgrade delegates using the route to travel to Business Travel 2000 conference at Manchester’s G-MEX centre to first class at no extra cost. It is held on October 4 and 5.
