See the natural highs of the wilderness state

I ASKED the barman at the Red Dog Saloon in Juneau how people amused themselves in winter.

“Drink and fornicate,” was the reply, “and definitely in that order if you’ve seen the local women,” he added.

Fortunately it was the summer and there were plenty of other things to do in the wilderness state. The population of Juneau, Alaska’s state capital swells four times to more than 30,000 when the cruise ships come into port.

There are no roads leading out of the city itself – the only way in or out is by boat or air. It took a while for the cruiselines to catch on to the potential but now cruising has become a popular way of seeing Alaska’s natural attractions.

Taking advantage of the few roads that there were in Juneau we went mountain biking and were treated to a view of the mighty Mendenhall Glacier. In the gold rush town of Skagway we took a helicopter over ice glaciers. Our week-long cruise included two full days at sea – a perfect time to take advantage of the on-board activities.
