mesa verde national park
Location: in southwest Colorado about 380 miles from Denver.
when to go: during summer when temperatures are pleasant due to the high elevation but the park is open year round. Admission is $10.
what it is like: on top of the mesa are many small deep canyons where there are five large and well preserved cliff dwellings inhabited between 600 and 1300 AD by the Anasazi Indian tribes. There are trails, guided tours and a museum, but virtually all of the ruins and the best of the park’s scenery can easily be seen on a drive through the area.
