Union-Castle Travel winds up after 50 years in business

LONDON-BASED operator Union-Castle Travel will cease trading tomorrow, ending more than 50 years of business in the capital.

The Curzon Company, which owns the Africa, Indian Ocean and Latin America specialist, blamed its decision on “the sea change the industry is currently undergoing.”

Five people will lose their jobs as a result of the move including general manager Chris Spalding. He will remain with the company until the end of the year to wind up the business.

Existing Africa reservations will be transferred to the sister trading division African Pride, based in York, which will continue trading as normal.

Union-Castle Travel said “suitable homes” were also being sought for other aspects of the company, including business accounts, private client accounts and Latin American clients.
