Lake Balaton
Known locally as the ‘Hungarian sea’, 50-mile Lake Balaton is Europe’s largest freshwater lake outside Scandinavia.
The slopes of the northern shore produce most of the region’s quality wines. Balatonfured is this region’s chief resort and the Tihany peninsula’s 18th-century Abbey Church is the cultural highlight. Resorts along the southern shore provide low-key accommodation including family-run guest houses. At the western end, Keszthely boasts the grand Festetics Palace.
Close by is Heviz, Hungary’s best-known spa and the world’s second largest thermal lake.
