MEET THE TRAINER:

Every fortnight we talk to people in the industry about their job

Sharon Bernstein, representative, Tahiti Tourisme

Education and career path: school and college, then straight into work. Over the years I have progressed through publishing, into advertising and marketing, but found the real love of my life when I began work for the travel PR arm of Communications in Business. I quickly decided that my real forte was destination marketing and have concentrated in that field for the past 12 years. I’m privileged to have Tahiti and other exciting destinations all under my care.

Favoured training programme: interactive. I believe in a flexible approach, always making sure training methods meet the group’s needs.Where possible, I train on the actual product they sell, rather than the whole destination. With fewer than 15 people I include Q&As and a competition that ensures everyone wins something, even if it’s just a bar of chocolate. With more than 15 people, Powerpoint and video are my favourite tools. I find that videos specially produced as training tools and not just destination ‘glossys’ work the best. Whatever the situation, I aim for everyone to walk away with a smile on their face and the opportunity to ‘win’ something helps maintain motivation to sell more product.

Favoured training style: in person. Make them laugh.

Top training tips: engage the emotions. Treat agents respectfully and they will become loyal ambassadors for your destination.

One thing agents should take away: that the destination is fun and they would have a great time if they chose it for their own holiday.
