ATC Web site under huge demand

The Australian Tourist Commission has reported a huge increase in visitors to its Internet site and is to invest a further £25,000 upgrading it this year.

ATC manager information services and distribution Michael Innes said that the number of people logging into www.australia.com had risen from 15,000 to 69,000 over the 12 months ending November 1999.

“We forecast that over the next 12 months this will rise to 209,000 users. We now have a 24hrs, seven days a week, 365 days a year service,” he added, pointing out that the highest number of enquiries to the site now occur on Sundays.

Innes that said there were no plans to develop on-line booking as it would still direct clients to their nearest Aussie Specialist travel agent.

He added: “This year we hope to invest in presenting information quicker, developing a better search engine and adding video clips.”
