BAA’s airports handled a total of 11.6 million passengers
during June, a drop of 1.4% compared to last year.
The airport operator, which runs Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted
and Glasgow, has blamed the fall on air traffic control strikes in Europe and
the loss of business travel because of the extended Jubilee bank holiday.
The weakest sector was North Atlantic flights, where traffic
was down 9.4% with other long-haul services down 3%.
However, domestic travel was up 5.3% because of growth in
the low-cost market and European charter traffic was up 4.1%, because of
increased leisure traffic over the Jubilee period.
