Classic Driving Routes
US West Coast, LA to Palm Springs
This week Tony Seaman, managing director of Holidays Autos UK and Ireland, selects his favourite drive, taking in the coast, canyons and deserts of California and Nevada
Three years ago, my wife Jane and I spent a fantastic two-and-a-half weeks driving around the West Coast of the US, during which time we got married and had our honeymoon.
We flew into LA, where we picked up our hire car and spent a few days visiting attractions such as Disneyland and Universal Studios, before driving along the breathtaking coast road to Malibu. I highly recommend the fish restaurants there.
We then headed inland and drove to Death Valley National Park, which has the lowest dry point below sea-level in the western hemisphere. The scenery en route is spectacular, with deserts, mountains and canyons all out of this world. We spent a few nights here before driving the 140 miles into Las Vegas, to the Little White Chapel where Jane and I were married.
After our wedding we spent two nights in Las Vegas before driving to Palm Springs for our honeymoon.
Palm Springs is an ideal base from which to explore Southern California, with mountains, beaches and desert on the doorstep.
My ideal car: “Anything so long as it is a convertible.”
