CDG tragedy: more cracks heard

FRENCH airport bosses have promised to tear down terminal 2E
at Paris
Charles de Gaulle airport if the whole construction is
found to be unsafe.

The news comes as construction workers picking over
the wreckage following yesterday’s (Sunday) collapse of part of the building were
evacuated today after they reported hearing more cracks.

“Police
evacuated the building as a precaution after the cracking was heard in the same
terminal,” said Jerome Dutrieux, spokesman for Aeroports de Paris, the
Paris airports operator. “The cracks were again in the departure hall.”

Slabs
of concrete, metal and glass crashed down on to a waiting area on Sunday
morning, bringing down a 50-metre long, 30-metre wide section of a long
tube-like building. Four passengers were killed.

Terminal
2E mainly handles long-haul and medium-haul flights for Air France. The carrier
has switched the 60 or so daily movements to other terminals and warned passengers
to expect some delays.
