Mottershead had been on an “extended family break” since mid-July,
which the company claimed had been planned since Mottershead
started with TUI at the end of 2001.

TUI Northern Europe Peter Rothwell takes on Mottershead’s role
as MD while retaining his current position.

Rothwell said: “Following his summer break, Chris has taken the
opportunity to review his personal circumstances and has decided
that he would like to leave TUI UK and develop his other business
interests.”

He added: “I would personally like to thank Chris for his
inspirational leadership during this period, for his clear-sighted
direction and for getting the business in such good shape.

“I would like to wish him every success for the future.”

A spokeswoman played down speculation at the time that
Mottershead would not return after his summer break.

“People will read into this all sorts of things based on their
knowledge, prejudices and mischeviousness. But he’s decided just
recently and announced his decision to leave today,” she said.
