More than half of all holidays booked in the UK will be
online within the next four years, according to
Thomson.
The company claims the advent of e-home systems – where
the television, Internet, radio, and DVD player are all combined
into one system controlled by one remote – will lead to the
web overtaking the high street as the main holiday booking vehicle.
Sales and marketing director Miles Morgan said consumers are
becoming increasingly comfortable booking online –
Thomson’s average online sales price is £530 per person,
only £30 less than in its agencies – and the merger of
the TV and the web would increase the ease with which people use
the Internet.
He said a quarter of its own holidays and flights are currently
booked online, rising to 40% with the inclusion of Thomsonfly. Last
year, only 15% of Thomson’s sales were online.
Morgan said 40% of people with access to the Internet would make
an online booking this year, with the figure rising to 80% by
2013.
