FEWER Club Europe seats and the removal of economy-class
in-flight meals are being considered by British Airways as part of
its short-haul operations review.
Speaking in Shanghai this month during BA’s launch to the
Chinese hub, chief executive Rod Eddington revealed some of the
specific areas the carrier is reviewing.
BMI’s decision to introduce a single-class cabin, in which
meals are charged for on most short-haul routes, will influence
BA’s direction, he said.
But he would not give a date for precise details to be
announced.
Eddington said: “Questions we are asking include: what are
the benefits of offering two classes versus one? How does
BMI’s decision influence ours? Do we sell food down the back?
What is the impact if you don’t have a premium short-haul
product? Does this mean you give away your premium transfer
business to Lufthansa or Air France?”
