Getting in the swing Down Under leaves everyone hanging around

IN A Backchat picture exclusive, we bring you shots of that famous death-defying bungee jump in Cairns by top travel industry personalities.

With one exception, they were all terrified.

Warren Sandral of French Life was biting his nails, while Jenny Stephenson of the Family Holiday Association suffered from chattering teeth just before her ordeal.

Then there were those putting their trust in pure, blind luck. Garry Winterburn of Manchester Airport, Liz Bird of Travel Weekly and Neil Armorgie of Advantage Travel Centres all had their fingers tightly crossed, hoping for a happy landing.

Stephen Bath was the only who appeared not to be nervous. He was ready for anything. Well, dressed for anything, at least.

Bath had already done a bungee jump in Cairns earlier this year, but claims it was harder this time round because he had to wait longer for his turn.

“It’s never very nice to jump off a platform and fall 150ft towards a lake,” he admitted. “But at least my head didn’t go in the water. I wouldn’t be surprised if I do a jump again some time – but not this year!”

Louise Cowgill of Forte recovered her nerve enough to actually wave and smile as she toppled off the platform. Cowgill raised an amazing £3,000 for the FHA.

Travel Weekly’s own Liz Bird, was reportedly the most scared of all the jumpers – an opinion confirmed by her look of horror in our picture. Just seconds after it was taken, her head was plunged upside down into the lake below. Never mind Liz, after all, it was in a good cause.
