UK arrivals expected to fall after bomb blasts

UK visitor arrivals could drop by almost 600,000 this year, according to an early estimate of last Thursday’s bomb blasts on Britain’s tourist industry.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, initial predictations are that visitors will drop by 1.9% while UK residents’ travel expenditure could drop by £2.3 billion. Business travel by UK companies is expected to drop by £523 million.

WTTC president Jean-Claude Baumgarten said: “It is expected that the impact of the London bombing, much like that realised by the Madrid and Bali bombings will continue into 2006, but will have completely dissipated by 2007.”

The WTTC figures stem from its Crisis Event Forecasting Model which estimates figures based on previous events.

VisitBritain said it was too early to start assessing figures, but said it expected a recovery similar to Madrid which saw an 11.2% increase in visitors last year despite the city’s bomb attacks in March.
