Robbery alert for agencies

POLICE have warned travel agents to be extra vigilant following an increase in raids on high street shops over the last few weeks.

London has been worse hit, with six reported crimes in a few weeks, but agencies across the UK are being seen as soft targets, according to a police spokesman.

The worst incident was at a Going Places office last month in Wandsworth, south London, when two robbers threatened staff with a pistol.

A second Going Places branch, two Co-op Travelcare shops, one Lunn Poly branch and independent agent Marle Travel in Balham have all been targeted in the capital.

A London Flying Squad spokesman said: “There are fewer robberies on traditional targets like banks and building societies. Robbers are now moving on to what are perceived to be softer targets such as travel agencies.”
