Travellers buying insurance from budget airlines are being ripped off, according to one insurance provider.
Online travel insurance provider Essential Travel claims that buying cheap flights can be a false economy for some travellers who it says are being overcharged by as much as £100 for their travel insurance policies.
Essential Travel managing director Stuart Bensusan said many DIY holidaymakers were “falling into a huge travel insurance honey-pot”.
“The level of mark up charged by online flight companies is excessive and a totally unnecessary cost for holidaymakers to pay,” claimed Bensusan.
“Consumers are buying reasonable or budget priced flights, but the providers of these packages are exploiting the opportunity to recoup money on their extras. Travel insurance is the easiest option for this purpose because consumers have been used to paying over the odds on the high street,” he said.
Bensusan was speaking after Essential Travel compared its price for 14 days’ travel cover to Europe and the USA/Worldwide and an Annual Policy to first Europe and then Worldwide destinations with that of the trusted flight providers of Expedia, E-Bookers, Jet 2.com, Ryanair, BMI Baby and EasyJet.
