UK firm launches ‘world’s largest’ tourism search engine – 22 June 2007

A UK company called Active Tourist has launched a tourism search engine which it claims is the world’s largest.

Activetourist.com has over 16 million indexed web pages and gathers together a wide range of websites across the tourism sector, from flights and accommodation to travel agents and tour operators.

Other features of the search engine include a section where companies can submit their website, a currency converter, and a directory section where tourism businesses can display their details for £10 a year.

It also filters the results so that only one page is ever returned from any one website.

Founder George Phillipson, who decided to set up the site after a search for holidays to the Lake District on Google returned multiple pages from the same websites, said Activetourist.com had handled 25,000 searches since it launched on Sunday.
