EU bans airlines on safety grounds – 29 June 2007

The European Union has banned all Indonesian airlines from its airspace, although none of the 51 currently flies to the EU.

The executive European Commission also barred entry to Angolan Airlines TAAG – shortly before one of the airline’s planes crashed, killing six people – along with four Russian airlines, Ukrainian cargo operator Volare Aviation Enterprise, and a handful of Moldovan and Bulgarian operators.

The bans will take effect on July 6 and European citizens will also be advised not to use the carriers when travelling abroad.

Meanwhile the ban on the majority of Pakistan International Airlines’ fleet, introduced in March, has been relaxed.

The carrier will now be able to operate services to the region using Airbus 310s and Boeing 747s in addition to its Boeing 777s which already have authorisation.
