Airport security update – 2 Jul 2007

Passengers queue at Glasgow Airport. Picture: ReutersAdditional security measures are in place at all British Airports Authority (BAA) airports, following the July 1 terrorist incident at Glasgow Airport.

BAA is advising all passengers that dropping off and picking-up in front of the airport is severely restricted and passengers may experience significant delays in reaching the terminal by car.

BAA is urging passengers to use public transport to get to the airport. Passengers using private cars are advised to use short term car parks to gain access to airport terminals.

Glasgow Airport’s Short Stay 1 car park is open as normal, however both Short Stay 2 and 3 are closed. Passengers parked in Car Park 2 and 3, may collect their cars on presentation of valid identification.

Passengers who pre-booked valet parking must drop off or pick up their vehicles from the Long Stay Car Park.

The main terminal at Glasgow Airport has re-opened and all check-in desks are now fully operational. Most flights are also operating normally, but delays are still expected as a result of the backlog of flights which were cancelled on Saturday.

Agents should check with individual airlines to confirm if specific flights are delayed or cancelled.

A spokeswoman from Heathrow Airport says the airport was slightly busier than usual this morning but that most flights are operating normally. The foreourt at Stansted Airport is currently closed. Passengers should get dropped-off at the short-stay car park.

Restricted passenger drop-off and pick-off is also in place at Gatwick Airport. A spokesperson for the airport says passengers are strongly urged to take public transport. Flights out of Gatwick are operating normally, with the exception of minor delays on British Airways.

Travel agents should advise their clients that the new passport scanners which came into effect on 1 July may further affect the time it takes to process arriving passengers.
