Holidaymakers evacuated as fires threaten Dubrovnik – 07 Aug 2007

Holidaymakers have been evacuated from the countryside surrounding the Croatian town of Dubrovnik because of the threat of forest fires.

According to reports, firefighters appear to have brought a major forest fire under control. The flames had threatened its suburbs and prompted some tourists to flee.

A spokeswoman for specialist tour operator Hidden Croatia said it had evacuated some of its clients to a safe area within the city walls and was providing alternative accommodation. It has also arranged earlier transfers, she said.

A team based in Croatia had help managed the situation immensely, she said.

Local peopled help firefighters avert a disaster for Dubrovnik during the height of the summer holiday season, earlier reports said.

Most tourists were not affected by the fire because the majority of hotels are situated along the coast.
