Tourism let down by Government’s failure to invest in transport

The Government is failing to invest in the UK’s transport infrastructure in line with tourism’s contribution to the economy, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council.

The industry body warned “continued inaction to address deepening [transport] infrastructure complaints is jeopardising the UK’s economic prospects.”

Speaking in London, WTTC president Jean-Claude Baumgarten said, “The Government should invest more in infrastructure and ease planning constraints.”

He noted increasing pressures on UK airports and the recent wide criticism of their mismanagement.

Whitbread chief executive Alan Parker warned “business and tourism could drift away from the UK to other markets if infrastructure does not keep pace with growth.”
