Virgin Atlantic seeks legal action on seat design

Virgin Atlantic has declined to comment on reports that it has begun legal proceedings against the firm that manufactured the lie-flat seats in its Upper Class cabin.

Virgin launched the distinctive seats in 2003, becoming the first airline to lay out a business-class cabin in herringbone style. The seats were produced by seat manufacturer Contour, based in Wales.

US carrier Delta Air Lines, Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific, Indian carrier Jet Airways and Air Canada have since introduced similar seats with Contour’s involvement.

Virgin Atlantic spent £50 million developing the cabin and holds patents on the seat design. It is believed to have initiated legal action against Contour and to be seeking the removal of seats by other carriers.
