Severe weather causes travel disruption

High winds of up to 80mph and heavy rain are causing travel chaos across the UK.

British Airways cancelled some short haul and domestic flights last night from Heathrow, and both Heathrow and Gatwick have advised travellers to check with their airline before leaving home.

London City Airport is also experiencing severe delays and cancellations.

The Met Office has said the severe weather will last into the early hours of Tuesday morning. It said parts of Wales, western and Southern England would be worst hit.

Rail delays are also likely, with a 50mph speed limit on some lines, and the RAC is advising drivers to be prepared for hazardous driving conditions over the next few days.

P&O Ferries has said the Port of Dover is closed because of bad weather and the Bilbao – Portsmouth sailing on Tuesday has been cancelled. Customers booked to travel are advised to contact P&O.
