Island sports altered


HAMISH Watson, general manager of Cobblers Cove, Barbados, will be at this year’s World Travel Market to celebrate the completion of a £100,000refurbishment.



The work includes a new boutique and fitness centre.



The project, which was completed just prior to WTM, includes the total redecoration andrefurnishing of the living room and the north patio, restructuring of the bar area and new soft furnishings in some of the rooms.

n The Almond International Orchestra is flying in from Barbados to perform at this year’s WTM. The 12-member orchestra performs nightly at the Almond Beach Club on the island and has just released its first CD. The first performance will be on the Barbados stand on Monday, November 15 at 6pm, during the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s Sunset Hour.



ANTIGUA will be promoting itself as an activity island during World Travel Market, claiming it can offer a lot more than just sun, sand and sea.



Events and festivals such as the Annual Sailing Week, Classic Yacht Regatta and Hot Air Balloon Festival, and activities such as diving, nature walks and sailing, will all come under the spotlight.



New for next year is Sports Fest 2000, the first multi-sports event to take place in the Caribbean. The festival will run from May 12-19 and is organised by sports event operator, Sports Caribbean and specialist tour operator Tropical Places.



Activities will include windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking and sailing, as well as tennis with Illie Nastase and cricket with Viv Richards.



Antigua and Barbuda’s new minister of tourism and the environment, Molwyn Morgorson Joseph, will be on the stand to announce details of his new marketing strategy for 2000, which will include a UK advertising campaign.



The strategy has been designed not only to encourage more British holidaymakers to visit Antigua and Barbuda, but also to persuade tourists to spend more money during their stay.



The UK overtook the US in recent months to become Antigua and Barbuda’s biggest market.



UK arrivals were 44% up for August, with a year-on-year growth of 32%.
