Crucial ABTA meeting to decide Newman Street future

ABTA holds its crucial extraordinary general meeting on Thursday to map out the future at Newman Street.

Agents have voted on the association’s blueprint for the past four weeks after months of consultation.

The plan is to axe its Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Councils and replace it with an enlarged board.

ABTA needs 75% of votes cast to press ahead with the proposals. If it fails, the association will call for a poll vote which will give each retailer one vote for every £10 of subscriptions.

Although the blueprint has been broadly welcomed, ABTA is unlikely to get much support in Scotland.

Scottish regional chairman Sandy MacPherson, who is also ABTA Aviation Committee chairman, said he will vote against the plan.

“I think that reflects the opinion of our members. Many regions will not be represented on the board and will not be part of the decision-making process. It’s a pity as it’s the only aspect I am unhappy with.”

He denied a ‘no’ vote would make his position as ABTA Aviation Committee chairman untenable.

“I will continue to support ABTA whatever the result,” said MacPherson.

Yorkshire and North Midlands chairman Simon Kalson said he will vote for the proposals but with reservations about the national elections.

“Someone could be elected because they are well known in the industry, not because they have the welfare of grass roots agents at heart,” he said. “I’ll vote for the blueprint but fight this part of the proposals.”
