UK traveller numbers to Mauritius rose by three per cent in the first half of the year.

The Indian Ocean island saw a ten per cent year-on-year increase in June alone, although actual figures were not released.

The rise was attributed to a campaign by the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority to highlight the destination’s appeal outside the traditional winter-sun period, with a focus on family experiences and value luxury getaways.

The tourism authority is working closely with UK agents and trade partners to raise awareness of the holiday options the island has to offer as Mauritius marks its 50th anniversary of independence this year.

This includes hosting a fam trip for eight agents in September, on the back of a trade campaign with Premier Holidays and British Airways.

MTPA is also encouraging agents to visit a new training platform to learn more about the destination to help with sales.
