1.8 million Brits to travel abroad for Spring Bank Holiday 2009

Around 1.8 million Brits are expected to jet off for foreign shores this Bank Holiday weekend.

ABTA president Justin Fleming said the market is being driven by families who are taking advantage of the fact that the national holiday is coinciding with schools’ half term.

He added this is particularly prevalent in the long haul market where Florida is expected to be busy as families take advantage of the lower prices available in May.

In the short haul market Spain remains the firm favourite with both the Canary and Balearic islands proving to be firm favourite.

City breaks have seen Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Rome and New York take the top five slots while the largest number of departing Brits are expected to go through Heathrow airport where 385,000 passengers are expected to start their exodus.

Fleming said: “In spite of the recession passenger numbers this bank holiday weekend are very healthy showing that the British love affair with foreign travel is as strong as ever.”
