SkyEurope files for bankruptcy

Low-cost airline SkyEurope has suspended all flights and filed for bankruptcy after struggling to cope with sinking revenue.

The small Slovakia-based airline, which was launched in 2001, sought protection from creditors in June and had been trying to restructure and pay its outstanding debts. However, today the carrier said it did not have the funds to carry on in light of reduced passenger bookings and flight revenue.

On its website, the airline has advised customers to contact their credit card company to seek a refund, but admitted those who did not book with a credit card may not get their money back. Those who booked with a travel agency may be covered under ATOL, it advised.

Passengers currently abroad will have to book another return flight at their own expense.

The carrier flew from Luton to destinations including Prague and Vienna. However, Vienna airport stopped working with the airline on August 15 because of unpaid bills.
