Flights at Gatwick have been resumed after operations were briefly suspended this evening following a suspected “drone sighting”.
A statement from the airport at 18.21 said: “Flights have now resumed at Gatwick following a reported drone in the area. While we investigated, airfield movements were suspended.
“This was a precautionary measure as safety remains our main priority. The military measures we have in place at the airport have provided us with reassurance necessary that it is safe to re-open our airfield.”
Aircraft were earlier circling the skies over the airport as they had been unable to land after the sighting at about 17:10 GMT.
The Guardian said the last take-off was at 16:54 and the last landing had been at 16:59.
Police officers still do not know who was behind the disruption but have identified “persons of interest”.
