Rio de Janeiro to get tourism boost after winning 2016 Olympic bid

Rio de Janeiro could see a boom in tourism lasting several years after winning the bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

PricewaterhouseCoopers head of UK sport Julie Clark said the event should attract visitors from all over the world, providing a welcome economic boost.

As well as benefiting from attracting visitors keen to see the Games, the Brazilian capital is also expected to gain a long-term boost from coverage of the event, which is televised globally.

She said: “While the number of visitors reaches a peak during the year of the Games, this effect can sustain increased tourism flow for several years after the event.”

However, PricewaterhouseCoopers chief economist John Hawksworth warned the city must have detailed plans for investment and infrastructure to benefit fully from the event.

He said: “Experience with previous Olympics has shown that there is no guarantee that winning the right to host the Games will lead to long-term benefits.”
