China: Four tours for winter 2009/10

Remember that winter temperatures in China are chilly and cool at best – it’s something that people never quite grasp. And encourage clients to go with an open mind – especially when it comes to the food as it will not resemble their local Chinese take-away.

There are good offers available for China, especially if there are spaces left on tours. But encourage early booking since escorted tour dates can get consolidated.

Also this week: we asked China specialists what holiday types are selling best this season.

The Majestic Yangtze tour

What is it? The tour covers Beijing, Shanghai, the Terracotta Warriors in Xian, pandas in Chengdu and a cruise along the Yangtze River.

Why is it special? It is a new tour and covers five of the most exciting attractions in China.

Who to sell it to? A seat in a coach tour appeals to those over 40, as well as first-time visitors looking to see the key attractions in a two-week period.

Sample product: It is priced at £1,990 with Premier Holidays and is based on three-star full-board accommodation with flights departing from Heathrow. trade.premierholidays.co.uk, 0844 493 7444

The Beautiful China tour

What is it? Encompasses Shanghai, Guilin, and Yangshuo.

Why is it special? The tour lets travellers see the scenic side of China, with stays in Guilin, Shanghai, and Yangshuo. This includes a cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo and an afternoon Chinese cookery course.

Who to sell it to? For visitors to China who have already visited the north and Beijing and who want to see some of the rural aspects of the country and stunning, iconic scenery – taking in the classic karst landscape of Guilin.

Sample product: Virgin Holidays is offering a seven-night tour for £1,533, which includes scheduled flights with Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow to Shanghai. vhols4agents.co.uk, 0844 557 4011

The Silk Road Explorer

What is it? An escorted holiday that follows in the footsteps of Marco Polo.

Why is it special? Holidaymakers get to explore the Silk Road, a centuries-old route strongly influenced by Islam and Buddhism, visit ancient forts and desert oases, walk on the Great Wall, as well as experience the famous Sunday market in Kashgar.

Who to sell it to? This tour works well for empty-nest couples who have previously visited China and want to experience more of the country.

Sample product: The 27-day escorted tour is priced from £2,990 with Wendy Wu Tours and includes flights, accommodation, daily tours, entrance fees, guides and visa fees. wendywutours.co.uk, 0844 499 3899

Taste of China

What is it? Tour plus three nights at the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival.

Why is it special? The festival draws thousands of visitors who come to marvel at dazzling, handcrafted ice sculptures. It is an exquisite winter wonderland to rival Lapland at this time of year. You also don’t miss out on the main sites.

Who to sell it to? First-time visitors looking for the main destinations such as Beijing, the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors at Xian, but who also want something different.

Sample product: An 11-night holiday from Cosmos Tourama departing Heathrow on January 7 is priced at £1,855. Hotels are all four- and five-star. cosmostourama.co.uk, 0871 423 8695
