The Hyatt Regency Trinidad is the island’s most luxurious hotel. As I was leaving, Beyonce was arriving. In November the hotel hosted the Queen and the Commonwealth Heads of Government, and in April Barack Obama was here for the Summit of the Americas.
It has a prime, waterfront location in the centre of Port of Spain – useful for Carnival access, and high-level government meetings. Rooms are large and luxurious, with views of the sea or the city.
And for a business hotel, it’s well-suited to the leisure market. There is a rooftop pool overlooking the ocean with plenty of sunloungers, a bar and a sumptuous spa – both perfect retreats for carnival downtime. A large breakfast from the buffet will set you up perfectly for a day of street-partying.
In the evening the restaurant serves upmarket cuisine, and there’s a coffee shop and bar open all day for drinks, smoothies and snacks.
The hotel management’s expertise in organising these large corporate events seems to come in handy at Carnival too – staff handled the vast influx of visitors without breaking a sweat and everything ran seamlessly.
The service in particular makes this hotel a real standout – it’s impeccable, while retaining that famed Caribbean friendliness.
