David Cameron pledges to appoint dedicated tourism minister

David Cameron has pledged to appoint a dedicated tourism minister should he win the election.

The Tory leader was addressing and taking questions from guests staying at Haven Holidays’ Devon Cliffs Holiday Park near Exmouth last Thursday as part of the Conservative party’s preparations for the election.

Asked by Bourne Leisure bosses about Travel Weekly’s Yes Minister campaign calling for the creation of a senior ministerial position to protect and fight the interests of the tourism industry, Cameron said he would have a dedicated tourism minister promoting the industry should the Conservatives win the election.

He also added that he and his family will take another holiday in the UK this year, having holidayed in Exmouth last year.

“We have some great holiday locations in Britain and I can tell you that as someone who is expecting a baby this autumn, I think you will find my holiday will be in Britain this year,” he said.

Bourne Leisure head of retail sales Allan Lambert welcomed Cameron’s comments, adding: “This is fantastic news. It is great to see a potential prime minister not only realising how important the industry is but also pledging to support it.

“It is great to have an indication from one of the parties that they will do this but whoever gets into government needs to realise just how important this is.”
