Ash crisis: Lowcost boss defends £399 repatriation coaches

Lowcost Travel Group has defended its decision to offer £399 transfers to all its stranded customers during disruption caused by a cloud of volcanic ash over Europe.

Some of the group’s customers in Lanzarote said they were angry that the offer was the first contact they had received from the company.

Director Lawrence Hunt spelt out the challenges faced by all companies in communicating with thousands of customers and added: “We had to let them know this service was available. We’d have angered more of them if we hadn’t.

“Gordon Brown promised 100 coaches and didn’t deliver. We have filled 12 so far and the feedback from customers has been excellent.

“Because Resorthoppa is part of our business we were able to put on the coaches.

“But having 55 staff allocated to this rescue operation, crossing the Channel and other costs all add up, so we needed to charge for this service.”
