Classic option: The Peninsula
Built in 1928, Hong Kong’s original luxury hotel retains its old-world charm. Guests can choose between historic rooms in the old part of the hotel or modern rooms in the tower that offer stunning harbour views.
There’s a fleet of Rolls-Royce Phantoms that can be booked for airport transfers and other trips, while sightseeing helicopter excursions depart from the hotels’s rooftop helipad.
For guests who have exhausted all the sights, the hotel’s academy offers classes in tai chi and dim sum making, and consultations with a feng shui master.

New contender: Harbour Grand
This shiny 41-storey glass tower opened in spring last year. It is right on Victoria Harbour waterfront, so each of the 828 rooms has a harbour view.
The decor in the rooms is luxurious but unobtrusive; the public spaces are slightly more opulent. There’s a Cantonese and a Japanese restaurant, as well as the modern European Le 188 restaurant on the top floor. Even the hotel’s 27m heated outdoor swimming pool has harbour views.

Boutique beauty: The Luxe Manor
In a city with an embarrassment of identikit international luxury, this idiosyncratic boutique property, fashioned in the style of Salvador Dali, brings a refreshing slice of bonkers to the Hong Kong hotel market.
The standard rooms are only mildly mental, with a touch of modern Versailles about them, but the six suites are properly potty, with themed decor including 1940s Hollywood Glamour, a safari room with desert ‘stars’ in the ceiling and the Mirage suite, a foray into surrealism where nothing is as it seems.
There is also a restaurant, jazz lounge and fitness centre on site.

Family favourite: The Seasons Hotel
This sleek waterfront property has 399 rooms furnished in either Western or Chinese style. Guests aged under 18 can share their parents’ room at no extra charge, with extra beds and cribs available.
There are also complimentary infant bedlinens, bathtubs, high chairs, nappies, sterilisers, bottles and bottle warmers available, so parents can travel light.
There’s a babysitting service, children’s DVD library, kids’ menus, child-size bathrobes and complimentary bedtime milk and biscuits – just let the hotel know children’s ages pre-stay so they can prepare.
