Inquiry starts into child’s death in pool in Canaries

An investigation has been launched into the drowning of a six-year-old girl in a hotel swimming pool in the Canary Islands while on a Thomson holiday.

Megan Thrower, from Kings Lynn, Norfolk, was staying at the four-star Gran Canaria Princess Hotel in Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria with her family.

Megan got into difficulties in the pool on just the second day of the holiday.

She was pulled out of the water by a waiter who tried to resuscitate her in front of her parents Stephen and Debra. Police and paramedics then took over but were unable to save her and Megan was pronounced dead at the scene on Sunday.

An investigating judge has already launched an inquiry into the death and concerns are emerging that there was no lifeguard on duty, as required by Spanish law, at the time of the incident.

The family had booked the break through Thomson, which features the property in four of its brochures, including the All-Inclusives 2010-11 and Summer 2011 programmes.

A Thomson spokesman said: “Thomson regrets to confirm that one of its customers died on Sunday, October 17, 2010, following a tragic accident while on holiday in Gran Canaria.

“We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased at what must be a truly difficult time.

“Our resort staff continue to offer every support and assistance to the family involved. However, in the interests of customer confidentiality, we are not at liberty to provide any further details at this time.”
