Birmingham Airport kicks off transport initiative

BIRMINGHAM International Airport has launched an initiative to cut down car use by staff.

The airport is to investigate giving preferential parking to employees who share cars, developing flexible working hours to ease congestion and encourage staff to work from home.

The 5,000 employees at BIA account for a third of traffic around the airport, with 80% travelling to work in cars. BIA hopes many will also use bicycles to get to work.

Part of Birmingham’s £260m development programme, which links both terminals for the first time and creates new lounges, includes a bus and coach interchange and a link to Birmingham’s main railway station.

The airport aims to have 20% of workers and customers using public transport by 2005.

The project is being undertaken with the support of local government and Birmingham’s major attractions, including the National Exhibition Centre.
