Rome introduces new tourist tax

A new city tax will be introduced in Rome targeting visitors staying in the city in anything other than a hostel.

The tax will be levied from January 1 and will be retrospective, while even those not liable for their hotel costs, such as coach drivers and tour guides, will also have to pay it.

People staying in a four or five star hotel will have to pay €3 per night while all other types of accommodation will cost €2 a night. Only children under the age of two will be exempt.

The proposal is awaiting final clearance from the Rome City Council and once in place the cash raised will be used to improve tourist services and infrastructure.
