An average of around 120 holidays are taken during a lifetime, with Britons spending more than £168,000, a new study reveals.
A holiday “life” involves spending of more than £2,750 a year from the age of 18, according to the Teletext Holidays survey. Each holiday costs an average of £860 per person with more than £530 put aside for spending while away.
The most popular spot is Newquay in Cornwall, with London, Blackpool and Brighton also popular destinations for young people holidaying without their parents for the first time and still to have a gap year.
The survey of 3,000 people found that Australia is a popular location for gap-year travellers as well as those taking retirement holidays. Florida is favoured by teenagers and those with young children, while those in their 20s liked visiting Ibiza.
The favourite stag and hen party destination is Amsterdam, while the Maldives is a popular honeymoon spot. Teletext Holidays managing director Victoria Sanders said: “Holidays are increasingly being used to mark important milestones in people’s life.
“There are more people travelling for stag and hen weekends, to get married overseas or celebrate ‘big zero’ birthdays than ever before. An ageing population means that we are travelling for longer and we can fit much more of the world into a lifetime than ever before.”
