Jet2holidays has suspended flights to mainland Spain, the Balearic and Canary Islands.
A statement from the operator said: “In response to local measures introduced throughout Spain to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including the closure of bars, restaurants, shops and activities including any water sports, we have taken the decision to cancel all flights to Mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands with immediate effect.
“We know these local measures will have a significant impact on our customers’ holidays which is why we have taken this decision.
“We are contacting our customers who are currently in these destinations, and who are due to travel, to advise them of their options, so we urge customers not to call us.

“This is a fast-moving and complex situation and we are reviewing our programme as a matter of urgency, so that we can fly customers back to the UK.
“The health and safety of our customers is our number one priority, and we would like to thank our customers for their understanding.”
Jet2holidays chief executive Steve Heapy told Travel Weekly: “Following the announcement from the Spanish authorities that bars, restaurants, clubs, beaches and even spas in hotels, will be closed, we have made the decision that it would be unfair to send customers on the holiday under these circumstances.
“We have always said we provide package holidays that you can trust and this demonstrates that we deliver on that promise and would never want our customers to have a sub-standard experience.
“We understand that the measures that are being taken in resorts are expected to have a positive effect and that things will return to normal in the next three to four weeks.”
On Friday, the FCO advised against all but essential travel to regions of Spain designated as “areas of community transmission of coronavirus”.
These include Madrid and La Rioja in northern Spain, as well as the municipalities of La Bastida and Vitoria in the Basque Country and Miranda de Ebro in the northeast.
The FCO issued the advice after the Spanish Ministry of Health designated these as areas of community transmission of Covid-19.
