Coronavirus: US cities order closure of bars, restaurants and night clubs

US cities are being put into a state of lockdown with bars and restaurants ordered to close as the coronavirus pandemic spreads.

The US has seen 3,782 confirmed cases and 69 deaths, but the country is expected to see a significant rise in cases in coming weeks.

President Donald Trump has imposed a flights ban on countries in Europe where COVID-19 has taken hold. That ban will include the UK from Monday.

In New York, restaurants, bars and cafes have been told to sell food on a takeaway or delivery basis only.

City mayor Bill de Blasio has also ordered the closure of nightclubs, cinemas, theatres and concert venues.

He said: “This is not a decision I make lightly. These places are part of the heart and soul of our city.

“They are part of what it means to be a New Yorker. But our city is facing an unprecedented threat, and we must respond with a wartime mentality.”

In Los Angeles, mayor Eric Garcetti issued an executive order Sunday to close bars, nightclubs, entertainment venues and gyms until March 31.

Restaurants will be closed to the public but will be allowed to continue offering take out and delivery services.

Illinois, Ohio, Massachusetts and Washington state are also ordering bars to close and restaurants to stop dine-in service.
