Coronavirus: Agent launches competition to thank key workers

A travel agent has launched a competition as a thank you to key workers – and received 150 entries within 12 hours.

Paul Knapper, owner of Spires Travel, Worcester, came up with the idea to give away a weekend for two in Budapest in January 2021 by asking customers and friends to nominate their favourite key workers for the prize.

Knapper, who has stumped up the cash to pay for the three-night holiday with return flights, said it was his way of saying thank you to all the key workers helping to fight the battle against coronavirus.

The competition, posted on Twitter, Instagram and the agency’s own Facebook page, says: “We are so grateful to our key workers! Thank you for everything you are doing! And now we want to give back.”

It asks people to nominate key workers, tag them in the post, and say why they deserved to win the prize.

Knapper said the competition had already attracted more than 200 nominations from nurses and doctors to pharmacists, delivery drivers and funeral directors.

He hopes the posts alone will help boost the spirits of some key workers. “We wanted to say a huge thank you and some people have written long paragraphs to nominate deserving key workers. There has been some amazing stories. To be nominated is a reward in itself.”
