Wizz Air Abu Dhabi start-up ‘progressing’ towards June launch

Wizz Air has confirmed the launch of flights by its new Gulf low-cost offshoot from next month.

Budapest and Bucharest will be the first European destinations to be served from Abu Dhabi in June.

The other points will be added in September.

“The launch of the group’s new low-cost airline Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is progressing in line with the initial timeline,” the carrier said today.

The update came as the Hungarian budget airline resumed a network of selected destinations from Luton airport and Vienna on May 1.

Wizz Air also plans to open a new base in Lviv in Ukraine on July 1 with a network of five routes.

The developments came as the airline revealed that just 3% of flights were operated in April over the same month last year.

Carryings collapsed from 3.3 million to under 79,000 as the majority of the 121-strong fleet was grounded in the midst of Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The airline has operated 71 cargo flights with medical equipment as well as 28 rescue flights since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Wizz Air chief executive Josef Varadi predicted new hygiene protocols and physical distancing as services re-start.
