Matt Hancock has said he “really hopes” Britons will be able to fly overseas for summer holidays.
But the health secretary defended the government’s controversial quarantine policy and urged caution over a second wave of coronavirus.
Speaking on Sky’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme, he said: “I really hope people are going to be able to fly to go on summer holiday, but we’ve got to take an approach that starts with caution.”
“We’re bringing in the quarantine policy again because as the number of new infections comes down, so the proportion of infections that come from abroad increases, simply because the number of new infections domestically is coming right down.”
On May 12, Hancock said it was “likely to be the case” that the overseas summer holidays season would be cancelled – but on May 28 said he was “more optimistic” and would not rule out foreign travel in summer 2020.
