Surfer killed by shark attack in Australia

A surfer has been killed in a shark attack off the coast of Western Australia.

The 21 year old victim died in an area popular with surfers and anglers to the west of Cape Naturaliste, about three hours’ drive south of Perth. The fatality occurred near an area known as The Boneyards near Bunker Bay.

Police said the victim had been positively identified but his name would not be released until his family had been informed. The man was using a bodyboard with a group of five friends when the shark struck.

The incident comes just over two weeks after British hooneymooner Ian Redmond was killed by a shark while swimming in the Seychelles, an attack that prompted the destination’s tourism chiefs to issue reassurances to the travel trade that the area was safe.
