EasyJet confirms closures of Stansted, Newcastle and Southend bases

EasyJet has confirmed it will close its bases at Stansted, Southend and Newcastle once a collective consultation process is over.

Plans to reduce the airline’s network were revealed in June as part of wide-ranging cuts at the carrier which could see up to 727 pilots made redundant.

EasyJet announced in May that it would cut up to 30% of jobs alongside other cost-saving measures.

The decision means there will be no more easyJet flights to and from Southend from September 1.

Some flights out of Stansted and Newcastle will also be cancelled, but these airports will remain part of the budget carrier’s route network – meaning flights on some routes will continue to operate.

Services from Newcastle to Bristol, Belfast and Nice will continue, as will flights between Stansted and Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and Amsterdam.

The airline will continue to operate at eight UK bases, serving more than 490 routes.

The airline said customers can switch to another easyJet flight free of charge. It currently lists flights as far out as September 30, 2021, but customers can opt to use their flight at a later date.

EasyJet said customers can also transfer to a flight to or from an alternative nearby airport, and the airline will reimburse rebooked journeys via train, bus or hire car providing travel is in “comparable conditions”.

Passengers can also claim a voucher for the full value of their ticket, valid for 12 months from the date of issue, or a cash refund.

In a statement, the airline said: “We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may cause. EasyJet remains committed to its UK operations which remain its largest.”
