Qantas delays flights as strike continues

Qantas is delaying 70 flights today due to another series of strikes by its ground workers.

The Australian airline said around 10,000 passengers would be affected by a series of one-hour walkouts by members of the Transport Workers Union.

Qantas has faced months of strikes by unions representing aircraft mechanics, pilots, baggage handlers and caterers. Unions are concerned that the airline plans to move jobs offshore and are also fighting for better pay and conditions.

Qantas said: “Once the action has commenced, everything will be done to reduce any impact on our customers and their travel plans. Unfortunately some flight schedule changes will result from the TWU’s action.

“Qantas will make every effort to contact customers whose flights are disrupted, particularly if their flights are significantly delayed.”

Prime minister Julia Gillard has said the Australian government will intervene if the strikes begin to threaten the national economy.
