Adventurer Simon Reeve to launch Responsible Tourism Awards

Adventurer and broadcaster Simon Reeve is supporting this year’s Responsible Tourism Awards.

The Virgin Holidays-sponsored awards, organised by responsibletravel.com, are in their ninth year and have attracted more than 11,000 consumer nominations since being launched in 2004.

The 2012 winners will be announced at World Travel Market in November in London as part of World Responsible Tourism Day.

People who nominate a category winner will be entered into a draw to win an seven-night trip to Kerala with Virgin Holidays and CGH Earth Hotels.

Reeve, just returned from a trip around the Indian Ocean for a new BBC series, said:

“Responsible travel will give you a far more richer experience.

“It’s not about where you go now, it’s more about what you do and how you do it.

“We often hear that tourism can be destructive but my trip to the Indian Ocean showed me just how many marine parks and national sanctuaries are supported entirely by money from visitors. If we don’t go to these places, they will be destroyed.”
