Hotelier to pay guests when it rains

A Bournemouth hotel owner is paying guests £10 for each day it rains on their holiday.

Sarah Uzzell, owner of the Arlington Hotel, plans to run the offer in August after a drop in bookings following the wet start to the summer.

She said: “What I’m trying to do is persuade anyone who hasn’t booked a holiday in August to take the plunge.”

The hotel will pay out if the Met Office records more than 0.25mm daily rainfall at Bournemouth airport.

Bournemouth saw more than twice as much rainfall in the first week of July as would be expected for the entire month.

Uzzell admitted it had been a “tough” year with a 20% year-on-year drop in bookings.

She told the BBC: “The economy is an issue, but the weather has not encouraged people to make a decision about booking a hotel.

“If it’s your precious time with your family, it’s disappointing – it’s just not beach weather.”
